Bart Furp I was stunned by this album... My only previous exposure to Gel-Sol was the sound-collage masterpiece "Plunder a Raging Moon", reminiscent of Wayne Butane.

THIS album reveals the man behind the curtain, Andy Reichel. Just plain wow.

From this moment on, you are no longer an ordinary human being.

netherworld_conscience The greatest anthem to the stars powered by black holes, paradoxes and dreams. This album is trouble if your not looking for a a journey through time, space and your subconscious as well. I truly appreciate the addition of vinyl sides A & B master as part of the digital download. A underrated masterpiece. I received the vinyl album as a Christmas gift. I was surprised by all the extra content included. 1 physical compilation album from Verses records & 3 cards for digital download albums.. Favorite track: The Magician's Sojourn.

Eugene Sotela Gel-Sol makes his debut vinyl release on Verses Records and it's a stunner. The first track sets up the weirdness with some very cool 3-D sounding effects and sounds that litterally sound like a soundcheck for the 2nd track "The Magician's Sojourn". This is my favorite track off the album and has an incredible demo video online that attracted me to this whole release. Having been a long time fan/ listener of Gel-Sol this album digs more into prog rock sounds that are most likely his inspiration for this release. There is some head trippy dialogue from a long lost unknown sci-fi B-movie that could be found on that 1980's Hollywood spoof "It Came from Hollywood". I keep waiting for the line "We have taken over your planet and there is nothing you can do about it". Album continues its way with more crazy sounds and fiddling around with knobs, tubes, wires, and switches. Very cool to expand the mind. "Smoky Charbonneau" starts off in a nice down-tempo style but quickly turns into an industrial noise funk fest and I'm lovin' it.

Side two starts off with cool tribal rhythm beats that goes off into a lounge like weird easy listening music. I'd imagine this what listening to muzak on acid woud be like. "Star Ring Mi" has an awesome 70's new wage sound that points to the ways of Tangerine Dream and early Kraftwerk. Krautrock comes to mind. The album closes with the epic "Two Sisters". This record could have easily come out of the 70's or from the future. Take your pick. Keep in mind that the album comes with a download code that included an extra 45 minute ambient experimental track.

Before I close out this review I'd like to talk about the awesome packaging and artwork. The abum comees with these huge album cover matted sized double sided pieces of artwork that can be swapped out on the front so you can choose your favorite art piece to be the cover for display purposes. So much care and work put into this release it sets the bar very high for other artist trying to make an impact on the music scene. The music speaks for itself and Gel-Sol will become a name you will hear more of in the future of experimental electronic music willing to take chances. peace Favorite track: The Magician's Sojourn.

about

Horse Head Bookends is the new full-length record from Andrew Reichel who performs and creates music under the moniker Gel-Sol. A long-time composer with multiple international releases and tours under his belt since 1998, Gel-Sol has been known for creating vast soundscapes, wild improvisations and intensely deep compositions. He uses a brazen approach to sampling- “plunderphonics” and philosophical take on genre- “Paracosmic” (parascosm being a fictional universe and his art existing in his own paracosm).

Further detailing Gel-Sol’s unique paracosm, is Horse Head Bookends, an album that is progressive in nature. The music constantly shifts through genres: space rock, Berlin School electronic, RnB/funk, avant-garde, dub, and minimalism. This comes from years of deep listening, study, and experimentation.

Andy plays all instruments on this release- not limited to, but including, live drums, lap steel, his massive modular synthesizer (named MORT), and even manipulating cassette players. He also single-handedly created the massive visual art package from conception to layout. The intricate, colorful collage work parallels the musical compositions, with a custom panel of artwork for each respective piece of music. The concept behind the album design features a die-cut opening in the front cover; with each piece of art on a full size insert, the cover can be changed to suit your mood. The vinyl version will be available here 9.19.

Horse Head Bookends is designed to be a full-on journey, with seamless mixes on each program side - a complete, coherent concept, from start to finish.

Currently residing in Seattle, Andy is a founding member of the Monster Planet music and visual series (now in it’s 8th year), and is the Creative Director for Patchwerks, a synthesizer store co-owned by his wife Cindy, an accomplished musician
and prog radio DJ.
